ACS Financial Compassion in Sports Award – 2017

Former NBL and Australian Basketball player Brett Wheeler received the ACS Financial Compassion in Sport Award for his ongoing sacrificial work with indigenous communities in Northern Australia.
Brett has volunteered to deliver training clinics in his sport, along with health promotion programs, to kids living in remote indigenous communities. His passion to support young people and to work in remote and culturally diverse locations has seen him continue his work in communities all over Australia, Fiji and India.

He is known as “Wheels” by many, but in the central desert area of Australia he is known as “Wati Wurra”, which means “Big Man”; this is not just because of his physical size as a basketballer, but also the size of his heart.

We would like to honour Brett, his vision, commitment and compassion for others in need.

Sports Chaplaincy Australia (SCA) has identified the importance of healthy, thriving communities by brokering opportunities for the appointment of chaplains into sporting clubs. SCA truly understand the need for whole, healthy people in mind, body and spirit and the selfless commitment and compassion to others in need.

There are currently over 10,000 requests from sporting clubs across Australia, both professional and grass roots, asking for SCA Chaplains. Currently, SCA have over 180 chaplains involved in elite sports; these include AFL, NRL, Cricket, Basketball, Motor Racing, Life-Saving, Netball, Rugby Union, Soccer, Olympics, Swimming, Athletics and more.
